Domestic Offshoring in a Knowledge Economy∗
نویسندگان
چکیده
During past decades, substantial skill and occupation relocation took place across U.S. cities: big cities attract more skilled workers and specialize more in cognitiveintensive occupations. Motivated by the empirical literature on improvement in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the increasing domestic production fragmentation—or domestic offshoring—we develop a spatial equilibrium model with domestic offshoring to analyze the impact of reduction in cross-city production team formation cost—e.g., communications cost—on the spatial distribution of skills and economic activities. The model generates predictions consistent with observed empirical patterns, including more spatial segregation of skilled and unskilled workers, and occupation specialization across US cities over time. In contrast to findings in the international offshoring literature, in which there are winners and losers, we find Pareto welfare gains for all agents with heterogeneous talents, together with a substantial measured labor productivity increase at the aggregate level. ∗We are indebted to Donald Davis, Jonathan Eaton, Pablo Fajgelbaum, Juan Carlos Hallak, Rocco Macchiavello, Antonio Miscio, Stephen Redding, Stephanie Schmitt-Grohé, Martín Uribe, Eric Verhoogen, Jonathan Vogel, Shang-Jin Wei and David Weinstein for helpful discussions and comments. †Department of Economics, 420 W. 118th St., New York, NY 10027. A macro-economic analysis of the effect of offshoring and rehiring on the US economy
Offshore labor outsourcing (“offshoring”) is a process in which US companies set up overseas production facilities, employing local workers, simultaneously curtailing their production on US soil and laying off part of their US workforce. This is followed by (is intertwined with) rehiring a part of the laid-off workers, to boost production for domestic consumption and/or export. We present a mat...
متن کاملOffshoring, Firm Performance and Employment – Evidence from German Establishment Data
This paper seeks to isolate empirically the productivity effect of offshoring on establishment employment (e.g. Grossman and Rossi-Hansberg, 2008) from a direct employment effect via downsizing. The analysis is pursued for a representative sample of German establishments from 1998 to 2004, using a difference-in-differences matching approach. First, we find a positive employment effect from a qu...

Offshoring and Unemployment In this paper, in order to study the impact of offshoring on sectoral and economywide rates of unemployment, we construct a two sector general equilibrium model in which labor is mobile across the two sectors, and unemployment is caused by search frictions. We find that, contrary to general perception, wage increases and sectoral unemployment decreases due to offshor...
